Retaining Walls & Flowerbeds

Walls That Hold Their Grade, Beds That Hold Their Shape

Stone and block retaining walls with drainage done right, plus masonry flowerbeds, landscape borders, and mailboxes that match the house.

What We Build

Built to Push Back Against East Texas Clay

A retaining wall has one job: hold dirt that wants to move. Around here that dirt is clay, and clay full of rainwater pushes hard. That's why every wall we build starts with a real footing, gets gravel backfill instead of mud, and drains through weep holes — so the water leaves instead of leaning on your wall.

The same masonry makes the pretty stuff too: flowerbeds that keep their lines year after year, borders that mowers can't chew up, and mailboxes built to outlast the truck that backs into them.

  • Stone and block retaining walls on proper footings
  • Gravel backfill and weep holes on every wall
  • Masonry flowerbeds and raised planting beds
  • Landscape borders and edging in stone or brick
  • Brick and stone mailboxes

How We Do It

How a Wall Gets Built to Stay

Walk the Grade

We look at the slope, where the water goes, and what the wall has to hold before we price anything.

Footing & Base

Trenched, compacted, and poured — the footing below grade is what keeps the wall plumb in clay soil.

Build & Drain

Courses laid level with gravel backfill and weep holes as we go, so water never builds up behind the wall.

Cap & Clean

Cap stones set, grade dressed back in, and the site cleaned up like we were never there.

Straight Answers

Retaining Wall & Flowerbed Questions

Why do retaining walls fail in East Texas?

Almost always drainage. Our clay soil holds water and swells when it rains, and a wall built with no footing, no gravel backfill, and no weep holes gets shoved over a little more every year. We build on a proper footing with gravel behind the wall and weep holes through it, so the water gets out instead of pushing.

How tall can a retaining wall be before it needs engineering?

As a rule of thumb, walls under four feet can usually be built without an engineer. Get much taller than that — or put a slope, driveway, or building above the wall — and an engineered design is money well spent. We'll tell you straight if your wall needs one.

What materials can I use for a masonry flowerbed?

Natural stone, chopped stone, brick, or block faced in either — whatever fits the house. Most folks pick a stone or brick that ties into their skirting or fireplace so the yard looks like one job instead of five.

Do retaining walls need a permit?

It varies by county and city, and it usually comes down to wall height. Most small landscape walls around here don't need one, but we'll help you check with your county or city before we start so there are no surprises.
